Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy

Limb Girdle muscular dystrophy is one of the neuromuscular conditions we often speak about at Muscle Owl. One of our key contributors, Zoe Hallam, has limb girdle and regularly features in our episodes of Muscle Owl Talks.

On 30th September each year, we participate in World Limb Girdle Awareness Day, and sell green balloon pin badges on our website in addition to producing our awareness raising annual animation.

Some facts:

Limb girdle muscular dystrophy describes a large group of conditions, which mainly affect the shoulder and pelvic girdle muscles. The hip and thigh muscles also weaken and waste over time, causing increasing disability.

Symptoms and complications associated with the condition vary between the different types. In some people, the heart and breathing muscles are also affected, leading to life-threatening health problems. Limb girdle muscular dystrophy can be diagnosed at any age.
